Durga Saptashati in Hindi – मार्कण्डेय पुराण में ब्रहदेव ने मनुष्य जाति की रक्षा के लिए एक परम गुप्त, परम उपयोगी और मनुष्य का कल्याणकारी देवी कवच एवं व देवी सुक्त बताया है और कहा है कि जो मनुष्य इन उपायों को करेगा, वह इस संसार में सुख भोग कर अन्त समय में बैकुण्ठ को जाएगा।
ब्रहदेव ने कहा कि जो मनुष्य दुर्गा सप्तशती का पाठ करेगा उसे सुख मिलेगा। भगवत पुराण के अनुसार माँ जगदम्बा का अवतरण श्रेष्ठ पुरूषो की रक्षा के लिए हुआ है। जबकि श्रीं मद देवीभागवत के अनुसार वेदों और पुराणों कि रक्षा के और दुष्टों के दलन के लिए माँ जगदंबा का अवतरण हुआ है। इसी तरह से ऋगवेद के अनुसार माँ दुर्गा ही आद्ध शक्ति है, उन्ही से सारे विश्व का संचालन होता है और उनके अलावा और कोई अविनाशी नही है।
इसीलिए नवरात्रि के दौरान नव दुर्गा के नौ रूपों का ध्यान, उपासना व आराधना की जाती है तथा नवरात्रि के प्रत्येक दिन मां दुर्गा के एक-एक शक्ति रूप का पूजन किया जाता है।
नवरात्रि के दौरान श्री दुर्गा सप्तशती के पाठ को अत्यधिक महत्वपूर्ण माना गया है। इस दुर्गा सप्तशती को ही शतचण्डि, नवचण्डि अथवा चण्डि पाठ भी कहते हैं और रामायण के दौरान लंका पर चढाई करने से पहले भगवान राम ने इसी चण्डी पाठ का आयोजन किया था, जो कि शारदीय नवरात्रि के रूप में आश्विन मास की शुक्ल पक्ष की प्रतिपदा से नवमी तिथी तक रहती है।
हालांकि पूरे साल में कुल 4 बार आती है, जिनमें से दो नवरात्रियों को गुप्त नवरात्रि के नाम से जाना जाता है, जिनका अधिक महत्व नहीं होता, जबकि अन्य दो नवरात्रियों में भी एक अन्य पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार शारदीय नवरात्रि का ज्यादा महत्व इसलिए है क्योंकि देवताओं ने इस मास में देवी की अराधना की थी, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप मां जगदम्बा ने दैत्यों का वध कर देवताओं को फिर से स्वर्ग पर अधिकार दिलवाया था।
मार्कडेय पुराण के अनुसार नवरात्रि के दौरान मां दुर्गा के जिन नौ शक्तियों की पूजा-आराधना की जाती है, उनके नाम व संक्षिप्त महत्व इस प्रकार से है-
मां दुर्गा का शैल पुत्री रूप, जिनकी उपासना से मनुष्य को अन्नत शक्तियां प्राप्त होती हैं तथा उनके अाध्यात्मिक मूलाधार च्रक का शोधन होकर उसे जाग्रत कर सकता है, जिसे कुण्डलिनी-जागरण भी कहते है।
मां दुर्गा का ब्रहमचारणी रूप, तपस्या का प्रतीक है। इसलिए जो साधक तप करता है, उसे ब्रहमचारणी की पूजा करनी चाहिए।
च्रदघण्टा, मां दुर्गा का तीसरा रूप है और मां दुर्गा के इस रूप का ध्यान करने से मनुष्य को लौकिक शक्तिया प्राप्त होती हैं, जिससे मनुष्य को सांसारिक कष्टों से छुटकारा मिलता है।
मां दुर्गा की चौथी शक्ति का नाम कूष्माण्डा है और मां के इस रूप का ध्यान, पूजन व उपासना करने से साधक को रोगों यानी आधि-व्याधि से छुटकारा मिलता है।
माँ जगदम्बा के स्कन्दमाता रूप को भगवान कार्तिकेय की माता माना जाता है, जो सूर्य मण्डल की देवी हैं। इसलिए इनके पुजन से साधक तेजस्वी और दीर्घायु बनता है।
कात्यानी, माँ दुर्गा की छठी शक्ति का नाम है, जिसकी उपासना से मनुष्य को धर्म, अर्थ, काम और अन्त में मोक्ष, चारों की प्राप्ति होती है। यानी मां के इस रूप की उपासना करने से साधक की सभी मनोकामनाऐं पूरी होती हैं।
मां जगदीश्वरी की सातवीं शक्ति का नाम कालरात्रि है, जिसका अर्थ काल यानी मुत्यृ है और मां के इस रूप की उपासना मनुष्य को मुत्यृ के भय से मुक्ति प्रदान करती है तथा मनुष्य के ग्रह दोषों का नाश होता है।
आठवी शक्ति के रूप में मां दुर्गा के महागौरी रूप की उपासना की जाती है, जिससे मनुष्य में देवी सम्पदा और सद्गुणों का विकास होता है और उसे कभी आर्थिक संकट का सामना नहीं करना पडता।
सिद्धीदात्री, मां दुर्गा की अन्तिम शक्ति का नाम है जो कि नवरात्रि के अन्तिम दिन पूजी जाती हैं और नाम के अनुरूप ही माँ सिद्धीदात्री, मनुष्य को समस्त प्रकार की सिद्धि प्रदान करती हैं जिसके बाद मनुष्य को किसी और प्रकार की जरूरत नही रह जाती।
हिन्दु धर्म की मान्यतानुसार दुर्गा सप्तशती में कुल 700 श्लोक हैं जिनकी रचना स्वयं ब्रह्मा, विश्वामित्र और वशिष्ठ द्वारा की गई है और मां दुर्गा के संदर्भ में रचे गए इन 700 श्लोकों की वजह से ही इस ग्रंथ का नाम दुर्गा सप्तशती है।

Where Goddess Durga Got Her Weapons From And What Is Their Significance?
Durga is one such ferocious form of the mother goddess who is renowned for her battle prowess. The half buffalo and half asura, Mahishasura who was the king of asuras, easily defeated the devas due to a boon from Brahma. The boon granted the asura partial immortality as only a woman could slay the asura. The defeated devas asked the Trimurti of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva for help. The three supreme Gods, with their combined powers, summoned a pillar of brilliant light from which Shakti, in the form of Durga, the ten-armed Goddess of war, appeared. The ten arms symbolise how the Goddess protects her devotees in all 10 directions; the 4 cardinal directions, the 4 ordinal directions and also above and below the living realm. The gods who witnessed the creation of Durga, offered their powerful weapons and adorned the ten arms of the divine mother with the power to destroy the tyrant asura.

After obtaining offerings in the form of divine weapons and other divine objects from the Trimurti and the devas, the king of mountains, Himavan offered Durga a vahana, the lion. With her ten arms equipped with the power offered by different gods, Durga, who was, as radiant as the sun, rode on her lion and arrived on the battlefield. She challenged the buffalo asura and after a fierce battle that lasted for nine days, Durga defeated Mahishasura, restoring peace in all three realms.
