বীরেন্দ্র কৃষ্ণ ভদ্র - এই নামটা ছোটো বড় সব বাঙালির কাছে একটা ওয়ার্নিং বেল; যে সবাই তৈরি হও, মা আসছেন। মহালয়ার সকালের মহিষাসুরমর্দিনী না শোনা পর্যন্ত ঠিক দূর্গা পুজো আসে না। যদিও মহিষাসুরমর্দিনী বললে শুধু বীরেন্দ্র কৃষ্ণ ভদ্র নয় আমাদের কৃতজ্ঞতা স্বীকার করা উচিৎ আরো অনেক শিল্পীর; যেমন দ্বিজেন বন্দোপাধ্যায়, প্রতিমা মুখোপাধ্যায়, উৎপলা সেন, শ্যামল মিত্র, মানবেন্দ্র মুখোপাধ্যায় এবং আরো অনেকে। তবে আরো এক শিল্পী একবার মহিষাসুরমর্দিনীর স্তোত্রপাঠ করার চেষ্টা করেছিলেন আর তার ফলটা হয়েছিলো বেশ শোচনীয়। সেই শিল্পী আর কেউই নন, মহানায়ক উত্তম কুমার। আজ এই সব নিয়েই আমাদের গল্প হবে হঠাৎ যদি উঠলো কথা-য়।

Biendrakrishna Bhadra, a name that has now become a representation of Bengali culture and Durga Puja. Until we hear the voice of Biendrakrishna Bhadra on the pious morning of Mahalaya in Mahishasura Mardini, the pujo festivities doesn't start for us. Biendrakrishna Bhadra was a legendary artist, however, megastar Uttam Kumar had once tried to replace him in Mahishasura Mardini and the result was devastating. Today we will talk about the life of Biendrakrishna Bhadra, his life, his work and also pujo preparations of Bengalis.

Mahalaya, signifies the termination of Pitri Paksha and the beginning of Devi Paksha, thus ushering in the season of religious festivals. It is said that Devi Durga begins her journey from her husband's abode in Kailash to her paternal home on this day. The glory of Durga is known from the ancient treatise Durga Saptasati or the Chandi. It describes the incarnation of Devi Durga by the unification process of all the power of the Gods and her emergence as Mahisasuramardini in the eventual fight with Mahisasura. Recitation of these slokas is known as Chandi Path and has been recited and known to combat every kind of enmity and adversity, from ages forgotten. Since the early 1930s, homes in Bengal reverberate with the immortal verses from Chandi Kabya in the recorded voice of late Birendra Krishna Bhadra. It is a beautiful audio montage of recitation in the enthralling voice of Birendra Krishna Bhadra, Bengali devotional songs with narration scripted by Bani Kumar, classical music composed by Pankaj Kumar Mullick and a dash of acoustic melodrama.

Mahalaya which is celebrated in Bengali culture as day 0 of Durga puja celebrations which marks the creation of Goddess Durga from Clay. Most years, the autumnal equinox falls within this period, i.e. the Sun transitions from the northern to the southern hemisphere during this period. In North India and Nepal, and cultures following the purnimanta calendar or the solar calendar, this period may correspond to the waning fortnight of the luni-solar month Ashvina, instead of Bhadrapada. At the end of Pitri Paksha Devi Paksha begins.
