Singh is a farmer and lives a poor lifestyle along with his wife and two sons, Ram and Lakshman. The region is drought-stricken, while in contrast, there is plenty of water being pumped to bathe the dogs of Thakur Vikram Singh. When Ram decides to divert some water for their parched fields, Vikram Singh kills his father. An enraged Ram goes to avenge his death, manages to kill Vikram's brother Badi Thakur, but is seriously injured, loses his memory and ends up with a gang of bandits and is renamed Thanedar Singh, as he was dressed in the clothes of a police inspector. Lakshman also gets separated from his mother and is found near a river bank by Police Commissioner Bhalla, who adopts him. Years later, the two brothers are fated to meet again, albeit, as strangers and mortal enemies, Ram is dreaded bandit Thanedar Singh a dacoit, who is unable to recall his childhood, and loses control whenever he hears the sound of a water-pump and Lakshman is an incognito CBI Officer Rakesh. Plot: Mohan (Jeetendra), in order to earn money, leaves for city. Here he forges a truth to get a secretarial job with Mr. Rai (Manmohan Krishna), who is a wealthy businessman. He denies that he is married, but the fact is that he is married and his family lives in the village. Mr. Rai has a daughter, who is unable to walk and hence uses the support of a wheelchair in order to move. Mohan acts as a motivation to her, as she is attracted towards him, and very soon is able to walk and run. Mohan sends money in his village. But the money sent by him is withdrawn by her sister who does not hand over the money to Mohan's mother and wife. Seeking no other way, Mohan's mother, wife and children come to city to stay with Mohan. Will Mohan be able to handle the dual lives that he is living? Synopsis :-
Vijay (Jeetendra) is a Crime Reporter and very often helps the police in apprehending criminals. When his stepmother (Kamini Kaushal) passes away, she asks him to look after his step-brother, Anand (Vijay Arora), which he promises to do so. Thinking that some girl named Saroj (Moushumi Chatterjee) is taking advantage of Anand, he secretly marries her and abandons her. Vijay's mentor is Rai saheb (Ashok Kumar), who had deserted his wife (Nirupa Roy) and his daughter Saroj, and son, Chandu (Rakesh Roshan). Rai saheb unknowingly hires Saroj as a lady servant for his two daughters, one of whom is Laxmi (Sarika) who is secretly in love with Vijay, and another one, very young, is disabled and uses a wheelchair. Vijay and her dad want Laxmi to marry Anand, which she refuses. Chandu has fallen into bad company of a criminal boss (Prem Chopra) and his sidekick Kitty (Komila Virk). Unknowingly Chandu assaults his very own father and kidnaps his younger sister to satisfy the boss. Saroj is determined to honor the marriage, but Vijay is not. Will these two ever get together? Will it be too late for Chandu to make amends?

Kundan, the pivot, is a lover of wine, women and gambling, yet he is a handsome young man of golden heart, forthright honesty and devil-may-care bravery. He falls head over heels for Kesar, a tom-boyish, upright and fearless girl of heroic heart, with the do-or-die decision. Kesar spurns him and her scorn for him intensifies the flames for love in his heart. Yet Kesar, with all the qualities of head and heart is a helpless have-not. She is unable to keep away the mercenary, wealthy and resourceful Lala Hakumat Rai, who is as old as her late father would have been, from the altar of marriage. Simultaneously, with the conquest of Kesar by marriage, Hakumat Rai for a large amount because of Diwan's determination to commit suicide on being told to do that by Kesar, whom he loved with the zeal of a Majnu. Kesar runs away from the altar on the eve of marriage and Kundan, just to save her from the clutches of Hakumat Rai, takes her to his home as his wife. Kesar poses as Kundan's wife under compulsion, because she hated the very sight of Hakumat Rai. She is welcomed by Kundan's old mother and the family. Yet Kesar refuses to be a wife to Kundan and he submits to her decision. He promises to protect her from villains till the man she loves arrives on the scene. Frustration in love drives Kundan further into the mire of nautch girls and to gambling dens. The agony of Kundan's mother and his family works on the mind of Kesar, who takes upon herself the onerous duty of lifting Kundan up from his world of sin and in her attempt to achieve her goal, she even takes her sight and goes blind. Hakumat Rai now strikes with the fury of a waiting hawk. He usurps the house of Kundan and drives his family out into the streets. He maneuvers to get Kundan arrested by the police and now Kesar, with a final attempt to save Kundan and his family, agrees to marry the wicked Lala, who is now all set to kill Diwan for his insurance money and grab the girl as well as the money. Just a day before the eventful marriage, Kundan is released. Now he has to decide whether he should continue to be a symbol of sin for the gratification of his senses, or a Devta, a symbol of service to his people.
