Thakur Vikram Singh, while driving home in his chauffeur-driven car, loses control, and crashes it in a building, instantly killing a woman. Vikram finds out that the woman had a young son, Raju, and decides to adopt him to atone for this crime. He takes him home with him, but Vikram's snobbish and arrogant son, Maan Singh, does not take kindly to this intrusion. Vikram decides to send him away to a hostel so that he can learn to get along with everyone. Shortly after that, Vikram passes away, his estate is taken over by his brother, Pratap, and Maan is allowed to return home. The first thing Maan does is to get Raju out of the house into their stables, and Pratap brands him with the letter "M" on his back. Years later, Raju is still working in the stables, is in love with Maan's sister, Poonam, and hopes for better times. When Maan finds out that Raju is in love with Poonam, he has him severely beaten, and left for dead, and arranges his sister's marriage with Yuvraj Singh. Years later, a man named Rai Bahadur Rajdev Singh enters the Singhs' lives. Maan suspects that it is none other than Raju, only to find out that he has no scar or any marking on his back. It is then that Maan finds out that his dad did not die but was killed. Maan swears to avenge his father's death, but does not realize that he may not even have a roof on his head as he has lost everything in a horse race to Rajdev. The questions remain, who killed Vikram; who exactly is Rajdev; and did Poonam marry Yuvraj Singh?

Maalik is a 1972 Indian Hindi-language spiritual drama film directed by A. Bhimsingh. The film stars Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. Ashok Kumar played a special appearance. It is a loose remake of Tamil film Thunaivan. It was the second box office flop in the career of Rajesh Khanna since the beginning of his 17 consecutive hits from 1969 to 1971. The film was critically acclaimed. There were other films of Khanna which were running well at the box office, such as Mere Jeevan Saathi, Apna Desh, Amar Prem and Shehzada in the same year, due to which this spiritual film was not screened by in many theatres by distributors, due to which producers suffered losses.

Mangal Singh has been a career criminal and he is finally sentenced to be hanged. Behind the bars he meets underworld don, Suraj and plans to run away from police. They finally escape from jail. "Colonel Sahab is a doctor in a psychiatry ward and Nurse Radha is heart-broken after a civilian patient, Dev Kumar, whom she cared for, pouring out her love and affection, leaves the hospital, as she had been unable to keep her heart separate from her professional work and had fallen in love with her patient. Next Arun Choudury, a writer and poet enters as a patient, suffering acute mania after being rejected by his lover, Sulekha. After refusing to take his care, Radha relents and starts nursing him. In between while caring for Arun she reminisces her past and tells a story of how she took care of injured brave army soldiers when she was posted in Laddakh during the Sino-Indian war of 1962.
Gradually Arun gets cured by the love of Nurse Radha, who yet again falls hopelessly in love with her patient. Unable to hide from the truth yet unable to face it, Radha herself goes insane and is admitted to the same clinic. Arun, promises to wait for her until she recovers, finding no other options that he could choose to make her better again.

The movie story deals with Widowed and ailing Savitri Choudhury who lives a wealthy lifestyle along with her son, Anil, in a palatial mansion in India. She knows that Anil is only waiting for her to die so that he can inherit the wealth and refuses to give him any money. The Diwan convinces Anil to mend his ways, get married, and patch-up with his mom. Shortly thereafter Anil does appear to have mended his ways, gets involved in charity, and even introduces a young woman named Deepali to his mom. Deepali moves in the mansion, looks after Savitri so much so that Savitri decides to make her the sole beneficiary of her estate. What Savitri does not know is that Anil has hired Deepali to act as his fiancée, and that Deepali herself is not who she claims to be, and is actually in love with a local horse-riding peasant, Ajit, whose father was convicted of killing Savitri's husband, and soon Ajit himself will be arrested by the Police for having an affair and then killing a woman named Sita.

After Shalini stops her mother from poisoning everyone in their house, she gets a job and feeds her family. However, when her former lover realises the nature of her employment, it changes everything.

The child runs away on seeing his dead mother and becomes a thief named Raja. Raja is a very handsome and intelligent thief who manages to steal and escape from police every time. He lives with his friend Tony who dreams of marrying his girlfriend Mary. Raja once steals at a home during a night and police chase him. To escape from police he enters into a marriage hall and in bridegroom's room. He finds a letter of groom who ran away as he does want to marry the girl his father arranged for him. Raja disguises himself as groom veiling his face with flowers when original groom's father knocks the door. Raja eventually marries the girl in the marriage hall.He feels troubled on whatever happened and he escapes from the room during the nuptial night without even seeing who is his wife as she also veiled her face with wedding dress. The groom's father and the bride misunderstands that original groom has escaped from the hall. Raja is caught by police and he sets to jail for six months. The original groom dies in an accident on the same night. Nirmala is thrown out by her in-laws as she is an unlucky girl because of which their son died. Nirmala returns to her uncle's home where she is not welcomed due to their financial position. She wanders everywhere and she finds no help from anybody rather try to spoil her modesty. She turns to a courtesan and dances for her living. Raja is released from jail and he searches for the girl he married. When he does not find the whereabouts of that girl he returns to his normal life of stealing. He rents a room and stays with his friend Tony near the place where Nirmala now courtesan Rani resides. Raja visits Rani's home to escape from police and he sees Rani dancing. Something makes him feel bad and he slaps Rani and throws away one of the clients who tried to misbehave with her. Rani does not get angry but she likes Raja slapping her. Rani and Raja, without knowing about their relation to each other, start to develop a feeling and they start to love. Rani insists Raja to stop stealing and Raja insists she stop dancing. Both decide to live a decent life. Rani changes the mind of one her clients and because of which his wife accepts her as her sister as she saved her husband from doing wrong. Raja finds a job as school van conductor. But he loses his job when the school finds he was thief before. Raja and Rani do a small business of selling snacks but are charged for child theft one day. The father of the child is the man whom Rani changed from becoming bad. Rani and Raja are released and they become good friends of the man's family. The wife of the person invites to their child's birthday party and gives her good saree and necklace to wear on that day. Rani loses the necklace given by the man's wife. To return the necklace they struggle a lot as it costs in thousands. Raja and Rani are compelled to break the promise made to each other without each other's knowledge. Raja goes to steal in home and gets caught. He finds Rani dancing in front of the owner of the house. When the owner of the house tries to misbehave with Rani, Raja rushes to save her. In a struggle, the owner is killed and Raja is blamed for that.
