Durga - The Warrior Goddess, The Female Form Of The Supreme Being | Hindu Mythology Explained
The Hindu goddess Durga also known as Maa Durga, Durgatinashini and even Devi, is probably the most popular female form of the supreme being from Hindu Mythology/Religion. Durga is highly venerated by Hindus as she also bears the name of Shakti, the female principle of divine energy. In the traits of Parvati and Sati, Durga is the consort of Lord Shiva and one can't be without the other, Shakti is shiva and Shiva is shakti representing the twofold of Brahman.
In ancient Hindus texts, the goddess Durga is often depicted as a beautiful gold-skinned woman with many arms holding each a weapon given to her by different gods. the goddess Durga rides upon a lion or a tiger, symbolizing her domination over courage and determination as she is fearless and bestow fearlessness upon her devotees.
In Hindu Mythology, Gods and goddesses are believed to appear on Earth in the guise of many other deities, and Durga is not different. She is known as Mahishasura Mardini, the slayers of the buffalo demon Mahishasura. She is Kali, the black goddess of destruction, and in the trait of Ganga, Maa Durga blesses anyone who bathe in her Ganges.
Another classification of the goddess is in the form of Navadurga, which is a collection of nine female deities known among women devotees, and comes with a festival known as the Navaratri which is celebrated for nine days across India. However, the most popular festival associated with Durga is the Durga Puja festival.
Durga appear in many stories in the Mahabarata and puranas, but her most popular story is the slaying of the demon king Mahishasura. she is the mother of prosperity and arts, for her daughters are Lakshmi and Saraswati, the goddesses of wealth and knowledge respectively.
